The Age of ReasonThe Enlightenment also known as "The Age of Reason" is a name given to an important period of western civilization that followed the Renaissance. The enlightenment occurred roughly form the mid 1600s up through the end of the 1700’s and was a time when the human ability to reason was glorified. The era was given this name because it was time when a group of scholars, writers, artist and scientists actively sought to use the clear light of reason that is rational thought to rid the world of superstition and ignorance. As a result of their efforts tremendous improvements in the understanding of mathematics and science occurred and bold new idea regarding basic human rights and democracy were developed that served as major inspirations to revolutionaries in both America and France. image source information source: Literature Launchers: The Enlightenment. Political Satire of Today This cartoon is a form of satire that clearly criticizes our education system. It is based off of Albert Einstein’s quote “Everybody is a genius. But if you judge a fish by its ability to climb a tree, it will live its whole life believing that it is stupid.” At a glance, the picture seems to be only about animals, but a closer look will reveal a deeper meaning.
The animals are simply a metaphor for the education system’s student body. Schools only focus on a student’s Grade Point Average, and teach mostly test-taking skills. However, not all students succeed in the same subjects just like a monkey is better than a fish at climbing a tree. By doing so, they easily look past the student’s talents that could help them succeed as individuals. This thought is shown by the fish. If a competition between the monkey and the fish dealt with water then the fish would win. In addition to metaphor, the cartoon uses Socratic irony. The judge seems serious about his “fair selection”, however it is obvious to the reader that it’s unfair because the animals have different skill-sets. The cartoon and quote itself are low burlesque. The ridiculous exaggeration is seen when there is a comparison between animals and humans. The idea behind the cartoon points out the focus our education system puts on grades. It also points out the lack of focus on the talent an individual could have. Therefore, the purpose of this cartoon is to encourage looking for a wider range of skills in students, and in the end help them find what they are good at. |

John Rawls Vs. Ayn RandsHere is my team's Google Slides presentation of John Rawls ideas during the Age of Reason as they contrast with those of Ayn Rand. Basically, Rawls was a liberal thinker who had the theory that if "everyone [would be] impartially situated as equals," a just and fair society would be achieved . Rand's theories, on the other hand, were against the "Veil Of Ignorance". Rand believed that in order to prosper in a society one must provide for his/her self.

Good Morning Mel! :What Would a Philosopher Think?By Amelia, Christian, and Melissa
|
We have created a video which aims to satirize reality shows whose stars are possible role models for teenagers, and whose lives revolve around poor decisions. It’s theme would be “Reality shows falsely portray stars as positive role models”.
As writers we give the video a cynical tone. By doing so we were able to agree more with the philosophers’ thoughts towards stars like Kim Kardashian, and also give the regular characters in the video ridiculous lines to say. We also decided to exaggerate Kim Kardashian’s point of view of her fame and talent. This gave us a means to emphasize the negative influence that she has on her audience. An example would be when she says “All publicity is good publicity” when she’s asked about her inappropriate tape that brought her to the start of her fame. On another instance, when we exaggerate the host’s excitement and make her oblivious to Kim’s negative side we were able to make it clear to those who watch the video that we are not actually promoting her actions.
Throughout the video we dealt with two types of irony: situational irony and dramatic irony. When we ask the audience members to voice their opinions, no one would expect our philosophers to be part of the audience or to have a twitter account. This would be our situational irony. The philosophers also strongly disagree with what Kim is saying which is something that you wouldn’t expect from a crowd who has been cheering throughout the whole show. We made Kim, the host of the show, and the two girls voice their opinions while being completely ignorant of how superficial they sound, however those who view our clip are fully aware of how ridiculous they are, and this would be our dramatic irony.
